Interview: Is Tropical

Interview: Is Tropical
Is Tropical are a trio from London who recently opened for Peace at their sold out Shepherds Bush date.  I interviewed them about their inspirations, what it's like opening for Peace and their favourites from 2013.

1. You guys recently opened for Peace at Shepherds Bush. What did you think of the crowds reaction?

That was a really fun show for a few reasons - we have a lot of history with Harry and the boys from Peace so it was good catching up with them and seeing how far their live show has come. They were really impressive! The crowd they had was INSANE - and we're totally happy they seemed to really take to us, even if they probably hadn't heard us before. And we're quite different tbh. We definitely felt like we warmed up the room and after all our support tours we learned that's job number one - play a short storming set and get everyone excited. A couple days later we went to Istanbul and have to say, those being the last couple shows of 2013 was something really special! P.S. No props to the dude who spent nearly half of Peace's set pouring beer onto people from the balcony. Seems no-one except me noticed his trolling.

2. If you could describe your sound in one word what would it be?

Collaborative.

3. Who are your inspirations for your sound?

We've never really tried to make a direct comparison when it's come to time to sit down and write a new song. Sometime's we'll get on YouTube and pull up a song we've been listening to to give the other two a reference for a sound, for example, or the way a song might change into a chorus. But basing our sound off an artist we love would be too limiting - individually we like a lot of very different music - Wu Tang, Bowie, Reed, Television, Queen, Love, Tom Waits, old punk, stuff from old skate videos... a lot a lot...

4. Who are your favourite current bands?

New bands like LSA, MT, Telegram, Young Husband; Fuzz, Benoit & Sergio, Branko, NY Transit Authority are good...

5. Whats your main inspiration when writing?

I think one of the main things we've always worked into our songs is travelling to places... little stories or superstitions you might pick up from a country or region, quirks of the geography or history... even weird phrases or names of places that have been around for a long time. The idea that there's a shared, surreal sort of association and symbolism humans like to imprint on the world around them - travelling far and often forces you to take notice of the anachronisms of certain places, and to start looking for that hidden world as soon as you arrive.

6. Whats your favourite album of 2013?

Hmm.. Connan Mockasin probably! There would be a different answer every time you asked.

7. And finally, our writer Connor was specifically wondering why you're called Is Tropical?

Is Tropical as a name came loosely from the fact we started the band during the winter in London in a house with no central heating. It was an escapist name, sort of a charm about what we all wanted from the band - to explore and become marginally more comfortable.
