Morrissey says that The Smiths will 'never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever reunite'. |
Reunions of bands can either go two ways. Incredibly amazing or utterly disastrous. There is simply no other way that it could go. Bands seem to be re-forming all at once and I'm trying to work out if this is some sort of 'trend'. I do not know what goes on in the music industry but I bloody wish I did.
Take Blur (squeals) for example. They were doing fine, 'Think Tank' was Number one in the UK - yet again but then all went quiet and Blur kept a pretty low profile. A tumbleweed just kept on rolling and rolling over the Blur scene until 2008 when they returned.
This has undoubtedly happened to many other bands such as My Bloody Valentine, Pixies, The Smashing Pumpkins, Pulp and even 'bands' like Steps!
Appreciating these reunions is completely down to whether you wanted them to come back in the first place. Young people who have gotten into these bands after they initially split up always seem to appreciate reunions more. As they weren't around at the time when these bands toured, they weren't able to ever see them live or discover new stuff but reunions almost always come complete with a tour.
Fans of bands when they were first around and making music do not seem to be very interested in band reunions. I'm not entirely sure why this is but my guess is that they enjoyed a certain bands' music so much at the time and they do not want to be even slightly disappointed by a comeback. Of course I am not saying that every 47 year old is like this because enforcing stereotypes is NOT the way to impress people.
So as I was saying, band reunions can either go two ways. Totally awful or splendidly well and we will never be able to predict which way they go.
