Mercury Awards 2013 Review

This year’s mercury award was one that many described as pitiful with the shortlist of nominees being ones lacking in grandeur. However huge artists like Arctic Monkeys, Foals, David Bowie and Laura Marling were all nominees, these are some of the biggest names in music at the moment and should not be over looked. Other nominees included Disclosure who burst up to number one this year and Savages who rocked the music scene with their fiery punk sound.
Many criticised the choice of nominees saying they were unrepresentative of the ever growing British music scene, however I thought that this year’s batch of nominees showed a varied and wide range of voices and musical style. However it lacked one of my favourite albums of this year, In Love by Peace which took much of the musical twitter community by storm.
James Blake, this year’s winner, won due to his different sounding album which has stormed the public. Many of you may have thought (like me) that AM by Arctic Monkeys would win after the NME blindly said it was the ‘best album of the decade’ however their 5th album was rather disappointing in my eyes. This is the same for Foals who’s third album moved into a heavier sound much to the distaste of many of their early fans who enjoyed the upbeat nature of their music. In my opinion from the list of nominees, James Blake was a deserved winner due to his new sound inspired by the dance scene and combined with a hint of imagination and emotion.
Contrary to this I believe Peace’s In Love should have won this year’s Mercury Prize due to their retrospective sound and their wide eyed nature. They are dubbed Britain’s best live band and would have been well deserved winners.
