Telegram - FOLLOW

Monday saw the release of what is possibly the greatest debut single of the year- Telegram’s stunning Follow. It’s the band’s first release and it’s now available in a ‘reputable record store’ near you now!

In recent times, many critically acclaimed indie bands have adopted a psychedelic edge to their sound; Peace, Temples and a large percentage of anyone else from the midlands wanting to get their face on the front of the NME have been making a name for themselves by making psychedelia-inspired guitar music- and East London-based Telegram are no exception. However, unlike the two aforementioned bands, Telegram have much more of an energy to their music, making their music sound almost punk. It’s the sheer energy that has been put into Follow that makes it stand out like a very sore thumb.

Follow is a fast-paced, yet beautifully melodic blast of what can only be described as psychedelic-punk rock. It starts off in a fairly standard way, but as verses are rattled off the band’s guitarists come into their own with swirling psych-rock inspired tones that would leave Going Blank-era Ride feeling somewhat inadequate- as well as some stunning production! And it is the latterly mentioned producer, Dan Carey that perhaps ensures the song the song is fine tuned to the level of perfection it achieves.

Telegram have close links with TOY and are pals of The Horrors, but with Follow they’ve proved that they’re something so much more exciting than either of them, and that says a lot. I spoke to guitarist Matt about the possibility of an album, who said "We've plans for an album, recording in the Spring or Summer next year, and perhaps out next September" which is a prospect that should have everyone licking their lips!

As well as that Matt said that they’re planning a solo headline tour for when they’re done supporting Palma Violets on their Rattlesnake Rodeo tour, and told me to check out the band Dark Bells- something I didn’t regret.

I just cannot recommend Telegram’s music enough to anybody, and Follow’s just the tip of the iceberg. B-side, Under the Night Time is every bit as brilliant as Follow, albeit less energetic, and would be fantastic if it were a single on its own. Telegram are a band very much on the up, and if ever there were a new band worth paying attention to, it’s this one.

10/10
