Wavves are a small surf rock band started back in ’08 in California. Their happy go-lucky guitar accompanied by their upbeat almost grunge-y vocals sound like a weezer/nirvana/pixies mash-up. They have released 4 albums, wavves, wavvves, king of the beach and afraid of heights. Each of these albums shows their progression musically.
The first show casing an almost amateurish sound which fits them perfectly, with lax vocals and guitar riffs to match those of scott pilgrim vs the world. The second progresses their vocals more and includes my favourite track by them, to the dregs, this song starts off with a pixies-esque ‘woahing’ then bursts into a grunge styled vocals with a heavy guitar emphasis. Their third album, King of the Beach, shows an outlook into their Californian life style of surfing and skating. The hit single King of the beach lets the listener see into their pot infused music still maintaining that lazy grunge vocal style and guitar noises. Finally, their fourth album, Afraid of Heights, shows a darker side to wavves slowing their sound downing putting a heavy emphasis onto their voices and lyrics, it includes a dark album artwork stark different to the trippy images and cats.
Overall wavves have captured a place in my heart, they’re mix between sounds, trippy artwork and almost hippy vibes have managed for them to slowly creep into my top bands. The way I can listen to it and feel like I’m in one of their garages getting high, making music and eating pizza has captured my attention like no other band this year. I highly recommend for anyone and everyone. I say wavves should get a 9/10
