Tribes were the sort of band that remind you of endless summer days, of teenage late nights and falling asleep during double physics the next grey morning. Their songs burned with hazy guitar lines reminiscent of mid-nineties Oasis, combined with almost Ryan Jarman-esque vocals. They were the essential laid-back dreary summer soundtrack; dripping with laziness, messy hair and simple scrubby guitar riffs. Distorted vocals accompany some of their later songs, touching towards a more Tame Impala branch of the alternative rock spectrum.
The band formed in 2010, rising out of the smog and cheap takeaways of Camden Town. In the four short years they were together, they released two studio albums and multiple singles. For me, they were a collection of all the things to look forward to in life - music for the future, not for the past. These are not songs made to cry over lovers, or to mourn lost friendships - they're songs for coming summers, for laughing and enjoying the life that you are living now.
But this band was never going to be for eternity. All good things must come to an end - and last week Tribes made this very clear. On the 7th of November, the official Tribes twitter page tweeted 'We are sad to announce that we will no longer be writing and performing together as Tribes.' followed by 'Thank you to everyone who supported us along the way. We are proud of what we achieved together.', 'You gave us the best four years of our lives so far.', and a youtube link to 'We Were Children', their first bittersweet single.
